Jobs search in Qatar

The Qatari government greatly helps students and recent graduates in their job search. First, the government helps to put together career fairs, which are held at universities for students to browse their different career options and learn about companies. Also, the government encourages companies to provide sponsorships, for which university students can apply. Once accepted, a student gets paid while studying, and after graduation a job 🔜 awaits him or her with that company. Moreover, some companies coordinate with universities to take lists of recent Qatari graduates. The main motivator for much of this support is the national policy of Qatarization, which obligates organizations to have a certain percentage of Qatari employees. Also, some companies that are owned by the government, such as Qatar Petroleum, prioritize hiring Qataris as well to support their own citizens.

In general, there are a few steps to follow to apply for a job after graduation. If a student did not apply for a sponsorship and does not have a job awaiting upon graduation, he or she would have to search in an employment or company website for available jobs. After finding an appealing job, he or she would have to apply online and wait for a response. The next step would be to go to a job interview, if invited. Graduates must demonstrate in the interview that they have the knowledge💡 and skills 💪 necessary for that job. If all goes well, the student would be able to secure the job. There are a few employment websites that are worth checking out for recent graduates, including LinkedIn and the direct websites of governmental organization such as Qatar Petroleum, Al Jazeera, and Qatari ministries.

One of the main challenges for graduates in their job search can be a lack of personal connections. Personal relationships, or "wasta" as it is known in the Middle East, has a big effect on the process of getting a job. Wasta can play a big role in whether your job application is processed in a week or several months and whether you are ultimately hired for the job. Unfortunately, sometimes people with less experience and knowledge related to the job might get hired over more qualified candidates simply because they know someone in power in the organization 👎. One of the ways to improve the hiring process and prevent Wasta would be to have more rules and regulations put out by the government and within companies' HR departments, punishing any hiring decision based on Wasta. This would help to create a more equal playing field for candidates.
